Laser Vision Correction in Alberta

Laser correction surgery is a great option for some patients to correct vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our optometrists will evaluate your eyes, discuss your visual goals, and help determine if you are an appropriate candidate for refractive surgery. The evaluation includes:

 Discussing different refractive surgery options

 Testing eye dominance

Review of eye history and medical history

Evaluation of the cornea and ocular health

Current refractive status with glasses and/or contacts

Reasons for Laser Treatment

Individuals who would prefer to eliminate the need for glasses can do it with laser surgery easily. Laser treatment can help with:

 Myopia (nearsightedness)

 Hyperopia (farsightedness)

Astigmatism (misshapen lens, cornea or both)

 Presbyopia (age-related vision degeneration)

Laser Treatment Process

Learn more about the process below:

First, the patient will undergo a comprehensive eye examination to rule out any underlying conditions and identify laser treatment as the best course of action.

Next, an appointment is made for the surgery. Small, non-invasive tests are undergone to examine the exact needs of the surgery.

On the day of the treatment, the patient is given a mild sedative to assist with relaxing and then the ophthalmologist will perform the procedure, which takes roughly 2 to 3 hours overall. Someone will need to accompany the patient home.

Post-treatment Care

After the surgery, you will be expected to wear protective glasses for up to a week during the night. In most circumstances, the doctor will release you quickly after the procedure. Your optical professional will discuss with you what to expect following the surgery, including any potential discomfort as a result of corneal healing.

Overall, recovery only takes a couple of months. Over the course of this healing time, it is important to follow any instructions given by your optometrist. As time progresses, you will begin to return to routine, simply having annual eye exams per usual.

Other Options

PRK, LASIK, and SMILE are common options to correct your eyesight. Other options for those with high amounts of nearsightedness, astigmatism or farsightedness include Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).
